Discount / Promotion Code Enhancements

We thought that the discount/promotion code features in our e-commerce and point-of-sale services were quite robust, with multiple types of discount methods, effective dates, cumulative discount options, minimum purchase requirements and specific item selection.  However over the past few months, several of our winery clients have asked us for more complex promotions, what I call the Amazon, Payless Shoes and Bed Bath and Beyond promotion concepts. This morning we deployed enhancements to our promotion code functions that go there and further.

As shipping costs are a huge factor in wine direct sales, a winery can now include a percent off shipping or flat rate shipping discount with any promotion.  Now, promotions like “get 10% off our reserve wines and $5 flat rate shipping” are possible.

BOGO, or more accurately BOGOHO promotions, where you buy one and get one half off are becoming more popular. These promotions can be set as repeatable, so a customer can buy 3 and get 3 half off. We allow a winery to vary the promotion, like “buy 3 and get 30% off”.

Promotions to get a percentage off a single item are also popular, so we now allow promotions like “get 20% off one of these eligible wines”. The system finds the highest priced qualifying item and discounts that item.

By allowing a winery to specify the items that qualify for a discount separate from the items that are discountable for the promotion, a winery can setup promotions like “buy any 3 of our red wines and get 30% off of one bottle of our reserve wines” or “Buy any 3 of our red wines and get 20% off your entire order and $5 flat rate shipping”.

We’ve kept the promotion setup interface straightforward to allow wineries to easily setup simple promotions, but also provide the ability to setup more complex promotions.  As always, these promotions can be defined for use in the tasting room, for online orders, or both.

Planned topics include effective website strategies, search engine optimization, leveraging mobile devices and wine club customization. The goal is to provide informative content that can be used by any winery, regardless of their technology platform. The videos will be on…

High maintenance clients need not apply

Posted by Ron Kreutzer on February 20, 2014 at 2:32pm 1 Comment

A prospective winery client recently asked us about a statement we have in the services pages of our website that talks about us cancelling our agreement if we find that a client is too high maintenance. We'd forgotten we'd added that to the website two years ago after we had to cancel a client who was blaming us for all their problems and sucking 20% of our entire support effort.

I've been told that I have an attitude when I have to work with stupid people. I consider it more of a…

Inline editing available for winery websites

Posted by Ron Kreutzer on October 11, 2013 at 11:28am 1 Comment

We think our winery-specific enterprise content management system is intuitive and easy-to-use (and our clients confirm this), however we weren't satisfied with our clients having to remember where to go in the content management system to make a change to a web page. All of our winery clients that use our website services can now display their website, navigate to the page needing revision, and make the revision directly on the web page using our easy-to-use content editing tools.…

Responsive design vs. mobile web app – why you may need both

Posted by Ron Kreutzer on August 21, 2013 at 10:22am 1 Comment

A responsive website is one that can alter the presentation (design) based on the screen resolution of the device on which it is viewed. A non-responsive design displays the same web page to a visitor if they are viewing it on a desktop, tablet or smartphone. On smaller screens, the web page is typically scaled down so small that the text is unreadable.

Back in 2005, WineWeb implemented cascading stylesheets (CSS) to control the entire design of a winery website. This separation of…
